FROM SHIBOBO TO THE DURBAN JULY: HOW BOOMTOWN CELEBRATES THE SOUNDTRACK OF SOUTH AFRICA

There are few songs that capture a moment in South African history quite like Shibobo.
Released by Kwaito legends TKZee ahead of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the song became more than a football anthem. It became a symbol of national pride, celebration and unity, helping to define the soundtrack of a generation.
Nearly three decades later, that same spirit is set to echo across another iconic South African stage as TKZee joins the artist line-up at Boomtown Presented by Johnnie Walker at the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
For some, the connection between football culture and horse racing might seem unusual. For Boomtown organisers, however, it is perfectly natural.
“For us, it’s less about the song itself and more about what TKZee represents in South African culture,” explains the Boomtown team.
“TKZee are pioneers whose music became part of the soundtrack of a generation. Songs like Shibobo transcended sport and became symbols of celebration, unity and national pride. Whether it’s football, rugby, horse racing or any major gathering of South Africans, music has always been at the centre of how we celebrate together.”
That philosophy lies at the heart of Boomtown’s 2026 line-up, which brings together artists from different eras and genres to tell the story of South African music itself.
Joining TKZee are BET Award-winning artist Sjava, Durban music pioneer DJ Tira and one of the country’s fastest-rising stars, Ciza. Together they represent the past, present and future of South African music culture.
The approach reflects Boomtown’s broader evolution over the past 16 years.
“What started as a gathering of friends has grown into one of South Africa’s most loved cultural celebrations during the Hollywoodbets Durban July weekend,” says the Boomtown team.
“From day one, Boomtown has focused on bringing people together through music, hospitality and a shared appreciation for South African culture. While the production, scale and experience have evolved significantly over the last 16 years, the essence of Boomtown remains unchanged.”
That growth mirrors the transformation of the Hollywoodbets Durban July itself. Once viewed primarily as a horse racing event, it has become one of South Africa’s biggest lifestyle and cultural occasions, attracting audiences drawn as much by fashion, entertainment and music as by the action on the track.
“The Hollywoodbets Durban July is no longer only about horse racing; it has evolved into one of the country’s biggest cultural moments, bringing together fashion, music, entertainment and lifestyle,” the organisers note.
“In many ways, it reflects the same spirit of collective celebration that iconic South African songs have always represented.”
It is this understanding of culture as a shared experience that has informed every aspect of the Boomtown line-up.
“The line-up has been curated to reflect the richness, diversity and evolution of South African music culture,” says the Boomtown team.
“Artists such as TKZee, Sjava, DJ Tira and Ciza each represent different chapters of South African music, from pioneers who helped shape genres and movements, to artists who are defining what South African music looks and sounds like today.”
The result is a musical journey through South Africa’s cultural landscape. TKZee represents the golden era of Kwaito and the optimism of a new democracy. DJ Tira embodies Durban’s influence on the national music scene through the rise of Gqom. Sjava’s fusion of traditional Zulu music, Hip-Hop and R&B reflects the increasingly fluid nature of contemporary South African identity. Ciza, meanwhile, represents a new generation of artists finding fresh ways to tell South African stories.
For Boomtown, bringing these artists together on one stage is about more than entertainment.
“A key objective for Boomtown is to create a platform where established icons and emerging talent can exist on the same stage,” the organisers explain. “We wanted a line-up that celebrates where we’ve come from, where we are now and where we’re headed as a culture.”
That vision extends beyond the music itself. Under this year’s Country Allure theme, Boomtown is placing greater emphasis on storytelling, fashion and self-expression.
“Today’s audiences look for more than just an event; they want culture, connection and memorable experiences,” says the Boomtown team. “Boomtown has evolved alongside that shift, becoming a destination where music, fashion, lifestyle and entertainment converge in an authentically South African way.”
While additional artists are still to be announced, organisers say audiences can expect the same commitment to celebrating local talent and cultural relevance.
“There will be a blend of household favourites, cultural tastemakers and exciting rising stars who are shaping conversations across music, fashion and entertainment,” they reveal.
“Boomtown has always believed in championing South African talent, and the remaining announcements will further reinforce our commitment to showcasing artists who reflect the energy, creativity and future of South African culture.”
Ultimately, the 2026 line-up is about celebrating the moments, memories and music that connect South Africans across generations. From the football fever inspired by Shibobo to the glamour and excitement of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, the common thread remains the same.
“Having artists like TKZee on the Boomtown stage is about celebrating those cultural touchpoints that unite generations,” the organisers conclude. “Their presence brings nostalgia for some, discovery for others, and reminds us of the role music plays in creating shared experiences and memories.”
From soccer stadiums to racecourses, the soundtrack of South Africa continues to evolve. At Boomtown, audiences will have the chance to experience every chapter of that story.
